2011: Year in Review: November/December

Films of Colour continued to be the band to watch after having a Bowie song published in a tribute album. Once again Diwali lit up the Thameside. There were touching tributes to former councillor Daphne Hart who passed away.

It is the quiet ones you have to watch out for and the Dockers have now moved into a play-off positions and on equal points with Grays.It has been a very fruitful festive season for the Rocks with their third win in a row. It is looking much brighter.

Savage assault on Grays man in early hours

The victim is a 35 year old man from Grays who was walking to work. He was attacked in Conway Gardens and again in Argent Street, Grays at around 2am this morning (Saturday December 31 2011). Several men pulled up in a car, spoke to him and then assaulted him. They then drove off and returned to assault him again shortly afterwards. The man has serious injuries but not believed to be life-threatening. He was taken to hospital for checks and treatment.

Call to celebrate 2012

What comes out in the wash in Thurrock

Labour’s Richard Howitt MEP voted last week in the European Parliament in Strasbourg to pass a law restricting the use of potentially harmful chemicals in detergents and washing powders. The use of phosphates in cleaning products that are subsequently flushed or washed away have been linked to excessive algae growth in lakes, rivers and streams, killing fish and other marine animals.

Speeding up regeneration

Proposing the plan, portfolio holder for regeneration, Cllr Andy Smith, said: “To help in the speeding up of new investment in Thurrock, the council and development corporation have been working with DP World to find innovative ways of removing unnecessary delay and bureaucracy from the planning process when dealing with individual buildings on the site..”

Sofa store defies retail gloom as they are set to open at Lakeside

It said its stores at Brent Cross Shopping Park, north west London, and Croydon were performing ahead of expectations, while a further store at Lakeside is due to open in Summer 2012.

2011: Year in Review: October

TOWIE star, Kirk Norcross helped out at the Seabrooke Rise clean up day. Another day, another royal as the Duchess of Cornwall flew in to visit Sericc. The M25 celebrated its silver jubilee.

2011 Year in review: September

Proposed electoral boundary changes were published and could see Orsett go to Brentwood and Ongar.

The Thurrock Council “Let’s Talk” roadshow went to Orsett but there was a very poor turnout. The same happened in Chafford. You can only try. A bin strike was averted as the council and union came to an agreement.

Fatal sex attack on pony in North Stifford: No charges

The attack happened in May. At the time it was reported that the pony died after two men got into the stables at Kemps Farm on Stifford Hill, North Stifford. It was then alleged that the horse was sexually assaulted it and then hacked to death.

Council backs commission report on troubled Tilbury care home

Road closures should be drastically reduced by new technology

ROAD closure times in Thurrock are likely to be reduced by an average of 39 minutes with the introduction of 3D laser scanning technology, roads minister Mike Penning said today. Essex is among 27 police forces in England to be awarded the high-tech scanners as part of a £2.7million project by the Department for Transport.

No previous experience of playing or creating music is necessary – just ideas. Nightclub owners may hold key to Tilbury mans disappearance

About a week before he was reported missing (precise date not known) he was seen getting into a big black car driven by a black man who is thought to run a nightclub in Ilford, east London. Paul is originally from Scotland and still has family living in Clydebank who, like his wife, Christine North, are concerned for his welfare.

2011: Year in Review: August

The riots came to London but stayed away from Thurrock. YT spent most of the key day trying to dampen rumours as dozens and dozens of people contacted us with “I’ve heard that……..” Two males ended up in court over passing on texts….and Labour councillor Aaron Kiely apologised over some of his tweets on twitter.

2011 Year in Review: July

The schools were once again remarkably busy in July. With exams over, education continues but there was lots of extra-curricular.

Gateway Academy had a great fun day. William Edwards waved goodbye to Ralph Henderson and Gable Hall did the same to John King. Hassenbrook had a lovely Year 10 presentation evening. Grays school had an excellent art exhibition while St Clere’s transition week highlighted their international credentials.
