Bulphan WI: September Report
Date posted: 15-09-2011
In September, Damien Wilson, manager of Upminster Waitrose, spoke to Bulphan WI about the history of the company, including the amazing founder John Lewis who had the foresight to have no shareholders but to share profits with the staff (or partners, as they prefer to call them) and to focus on workforce happiness, as well as other ethical practices. We were pleased to hear that 80% of Waitrose goods are British, and all their meat is from Britain or Northern Ireland. When asked about food waste, Damien told us that 135 Waitrose stores are powered partly by food waste.
16th September is Love your Library day, so to show our appreciation, WI member and avid reader Pat Hall presented a cake, iced to resemble a book, with the words Bulphan WI love their library, to Barry Burt, who has brought the mobile library to Bulphan every week for over 30 years.
We always welcome new members and visitors – you don’t have to live in Bulphan to join – you just have to be a woman!
