Little Mitchell, from Hornchurch, Essex is only 6 years old and suffers from Stage 4 Neuroblastoma Cancer. His family and friends are attempting to raise the £300,000 that he needs to travel to Germany or the USA to get treatment for the disease.
When Richard Hang Hong, the chief instructor of Seitou Ryu Karate club, heard about Mitchell’s plight he decided to dedicate the club’s 4th Annual Charity Tournament to raising money to get help for Mitchell.
The event took place recently at The Gateway Academy, Tilbury
. 150 competitors took part, aged between 5 and 50, beginners to black belts, representing 14 martial arts clubs from around Essex (Grays, South Ockendon, Wickford, Basildon, Chelmsford, Colchester and Southend) as well as clubs from London, Oxford, Basingstoke, Bracknell and Kent.
The tournament raised £650 pounds for Mitchell, his Grandmother Jennyfer Nicholls and close family friend Davina Linnen attended The Gateway Academy in Tilbury to receive the cheque on behalf of the appeal. Jennyfer said; “This morning i was very honoured to be invited to collect on behalf of my grandsons charity a cheque for over £650 that was raised by Karate clubs that came together for a very big competition. This started with a lady I met there called Kerry Stokes who children go to the same school as Davina. A very big thanks to Richard who made this happen today”
Richard, father of two, said “We heard about Mitchell through Kerry Stokes, a parent at our South Ockendon class who was taking part in a sponsored skydive in aid of Mitchell. We were so touched by Mitchell’s story that we just had to do something to help. Students from across all of our classes sponsored Kerry with £293, but afterwards we felt we had to do more so we ran this year’s charity tournament in aid of Mitchell. We wish Mitchell all the best in his fight against Neuroblastoma and hope he makes a quick and full recovery. It makes me so happy to see that so many clubs came to support this event and help to raise funds for his cause. This was only our 4th year running a charity tournament and we nearly doubled the amount raised from the last event. I can’t wait to see what happens at the next one!”
