Speedway: Hammers miss out on south coast

Date posted: 26-06-2012

The Hammers returned from Arlington empty handed tonight, going down 51- 39 against The Eastbourne Eagles in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

Despite the Hammers taking an early eight point lead after heat 4, with Rob Mear delivering two heat wins, the Eagles gradually clawed their way back into the meeting, levelling the scores after heat 9. A 5-1 to the Eagles in heat 13 left the Hammers with work to do to claim an away point, in the final two heats.

Heat 14 proved decisive when referee Christina Turnbull called all four back after The Eagles rider Timo Lahti hit the deck in the first turn. In the subsequent re-run, Lahti teamed up with Cameron Woodward to deliver a further 5-1. Despite their best efforts coming off unfancied gates 2 and 4 in the final heat, Hammers heat leaders Davey Watt & Peter Karlsson were unable to achieve the necessary 5-1 to claim the away point.
