The procession, led by The Sutherland Pipes and Drums, will kick off at 3pm by Cllr Yash Gupta, the Mayor of Thurrock from Socketts Heath and will then march down the entire 3km route of the Olympic Torch, finishing in Hogg Lane. From around 4pm excitement builds as the Torch Relay presenting partners make their way along the route giving out souvenirs and entertaining the crowds before the Olympic Flame arrives at 5pm.
Edwin Palin, Pipe Major of The Sutherland Pipes and Drums said “It is such a great honour for our pipers to lead this wonderful procession, especially as the sound of bagpipes has a powerful cross-cultural sound that appeals to all ages”
Aveley Primary School will be bringing their famous 20 foot giant which they created and named “Aveleynne” wearing her dress that was inspired by Thurrock’s countryside, landscape and road network
The Bells of St Peter and St Paul’s Parish Church will also be ringing in the heart of Grays Town Centre.
Reverend Darren Barlow of the church said “Church bells have traditionally been rung to signify events and important occasions as well as calling out to the parish for services so it seem so fitting to have our church bells ring to celebrate this wonderful event for all our community to enjoy. I am also pleased that a number of our local churches are showing they are central to the community by offering free refreshments and access to their toilet facilities throughout the day”.
The procession will not be the only entertainment for visitors to enjoy as there will be a spectrum of activities along the route. Thurrock Youth Orchestra, Royal Opera House Thurrock Community Chorus and Golden Voices Choir will be based outside the Thameside Theatre .There is a second stage at the Honda Garage in Grays which will feature Woodside School Steel Drummers, Grays Narankari group and Thurrock Music Services Guitar band.
