Petition launched against animal attackers

Date posted: 05-07-2012

LAST YEAR, Thurrock residents were appalled by a crazed attack and killing of a shetland pony in North Stifford.

Now concerned Thurrock residents have launched a petition to call for stronger punishments.

Under the Animal Welfare Act of 2006 those who carry out attacks on animals can only be sentenced to a maximum of six months in prison, while the Criminal Damage Act 1971 issues a maximum ten year sentence.

The Equine Quorum for Unified Animal Law (EQUA) have launched the petition which needs 100,000 signatures in order for their to be a debate in the House of Commons.

The petition can be found on epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/34320.
