In an exciting game that went down to the wire Andy Ridley hit a four from the last ball of the game to give Horndon 2nd XI victory over Basildon & Pitsea at the Recreation Ground on Saturday.
Horndon skipper Lewis Crooks won the toss and decided to field in the damp and overcast conditions. Mark Wills and Theo Foley removed both openers early on to reduce Basildon to 13-2. However Phil Tooke and Mark Amos bought Basildon back into the game putting on a partnership of 138 before Tooke was stumped for 74 by Connor Hammond of the bowling of Bradley Mason. Mason then took another two wickets in consecutive overs, Amos was caught on the boundary by Lewis Crooks and Ben White bowled for 1 to reduce Basildon to 156-5. Lewis Crooks picked up two wickets for 53 and Mason added another to finish with figures of 4-56. Some late hitting from Ateeb Hasan pushed the Basildon total to 221-8 from their 52 overs.
In reply Ben Munday and Mohammed Ali took three early wickets leaving Horndon on 38-3. But in similarity to the Basildon innings Terry Hurrell and Andy Ridley then put on a century partnership. Hurrell scored 63 before being caught by Munday off the bowling of Ryan Smith with the score on 150. Dave Roberts hit 24 in a partnership of 62 with Andy Ridley to take Horndon to the verge of victory. However needing 4 to win off the last over Ben Munday took two wickets leaving horndon needing three to win off the last ball. Ridley hit a cracking drive to give Horndon victory bringing his score to 76 not out including 1 six and 7 fours.
Victory extends Horndon lead at the top of the SNEL 2nd XI Div 3 to 35 points.
