Athletics: Vets continue to excel
Date posted: 08-08-2012
ONE of the Club’s stalwarts, Don Lawless, excelled himself in the recent National Veterans Track and Field Championships. He took the bronze medal in the V45 category Steeplechase. As competitive as ever, the Purfleet based athlete just missed out on selection for the Scottish Cross Country Team when he was in his 20s.
After a break from the sport to play football at senior level he’s back running as enthusiastically as ever. He can look forward to a good winter season with the Club’s strong senior and veterans squads.
Jon Metcalf is another quality performer in the veterans ranks. He won two titles at the recent Eastern Veteran’s Cross Country Championships.
In the V50 category he won the 800m in 2m15s and surprised himself by winning the 400m as well.
Jon gave the Club’s youngsters a boost when he brought his Olympic torch to the Club’s training night last Tuesday. Jon had run his leg of the torch relay through Basildon.
Entries are building steadily for the Mel Batty 10K to be held on August 26th. Runners over the age of 15 of all standards are welcome to enter.
