Grays Ath 4 v 1 Brentwood Town
GRAYS ATHLETIC produced some champagne football to stamp their authority on the league with a 4-1 victory against Brentwood Town.
Early chances for Grays as they looked to dominate.
A goalmouth melee in the 5th minute could have easily seen the ball go in but the Towns keeper managed to hold onto the ball.
Brentwood did look lively especially with Gregg Cohen up front but not as lively as Luke Marshall who was once again a handful.
The corners continued to rain down with Grays having a fair shout for a penalty in the 18th minute
Brentwood had a gilt chance to open the scoring when they sliced open the Grays defence, the ball fell to Abs Thompson near the penalty spot but his shot went wide of the post.
But it was Grays who opened the scoring in the 25th minute when Junior Baker rose high above the defence to guide a header into the Brentwood net.
Grays needed that second goal and missed two great opportunities in front of goal.
But this was a Grays very comfortable in their own skin, playing slick and expansive football on a lovely surface.
Luke Marshall really should have made it two just before half time when he burst through down the middle but an extra touch and fine keeping by Elliot Justham denied him.
Jack West had had a quiet game but came alive in the 49th minute when he latched onto a Marshall cross but his volley just dipped over the bar.
And Lamar Johnson had also had very little to do until the 57th minute when a Brentwood free kick looked like it was heading straight to the top left hand part of the goal but the athletic Johnson athletically turned the ball round the post.
It was all too close for comfort for Grays. They were plugging away but to no avail. Jack west put a great through ball in to Luke Marshall who carved out a corner.
The vital second came in the 73rd minute when in another goalmouth scramble, Craig Pope turned the ball in from close range.
Brentwood rang in the changes but they had looked a bit semi-detached all evening however, they eked out a penalty in the 76th minute after Marshall was judged to have brought Butterworth down. He got up to put the pen away.
But Grays soon restored the two goal advantage as the hard working Jack West marauded into the area and neatly slotted the ball under the Brentwood keeper.
Craig Pope made it 4-1 in injury time.
