Grays make heavy weather as they progress in FA Cup

FA Cup Preliminary Round
Grays Ath 1 v 0 Takeley
GRAYS did what was required in thunder and lightening to go through to the next round of the FA Cup.
Tyrone Scarlett produced the first run of the afternoon on the right and forcing a corner. From the corner, the ball skidded across the area and Ryan Kirby just failed to find the target at the far post.
The heavens opened but that did not deter Grays with chances coming for Joe Sweeney but it was Jack West who opened the scoring in the 12th minute as he latched onto a ball from the left to step in front of the defender and side foot it strongly past the keeper.
What is interesting is that Grays Athletic seem to have a strength in depth that fans haven’t seen for a number of years. Tyrone Scarlett seems to have a great appetite for the game and his tenacity won generous applause from the crowd.
The first half did not really produce any more chances until on the stroke of half time when an appropriate (considering the weather) thunderbolt from Joe Sweeney produced a fine save from Ron Yates.
Grays started the second half determined to continue with their touch football. Yates made another fine save from Jack West.
Perhaps Grays had the top of the table clash with Chatham on their mind but they definitely took their foot off the gas.
Yates again made a fine point blank save from Joao Carlos.
There were worrying scenes after Grays keeper Lamar Johnson went off on a stretcher with a leg injury following a clash with a Takeley striker.
Grays by now had completely lost their momentum. Takeley drew too great saves out of George Kamarusi.
But Grays Ath saw out the game and now face Norwich United on September 8th.
