FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round
Basildon United 0 v 3 Thurrock
By Bill Robinson
A BELOW par performance from the Young Fleet side but the job was done and they are through to the next round.
The first 15 minutes saw Thurrock pin the home side back in their own half but failed to test their keeper, Steve Brown, with any real threat.
Basildon began to find their own momentum and started to play some attacking football, having already won through two earlier rounds they had the belief that the underdogs could do it again.
Just before the break, on 44 minutes, Thurrock got the break and goal they needed, a cross came into the box, the keeper and Obamwonyi both jumped for the ball, it dropped kindly for Charlie Stimson at the far post who planted the ball firmly into the net.
The second half saw Thurrock playing better now that the tension had been broken with the goal. Basildon still looked a danger on the break and twice keeper Wil Viner was called on to make fine saves.
On 59 minutes debutant striker Leroy Griffiths opened his Thurrock account when he collected the ball on the edge of the box, he curled a fine shot just inside the far post giving the keeper no chance.
Just two minutes later Thurrock secured the win when Charlie Stimson got his second goal running into the box to divert the ball wide of the keeper from close range after Orilonishe and Griffiths had worked the move down the left flank.
On 65 minutes the referee booked the Basildon keeper Steve Brown twice within a minute for verbal abuse of the linesman and was sent from the field.
With the game won Thurrock played out the remaining minutes settling for the 3-0 victory.
