FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round
Horsham 1 v 2 Thurrock
Bill Robinson reports from Gorings Mead………..
Thurrock progressed into the next round with a workman like performance and Job Done attitude. They never dominated the game but were never dominated by the home side and were worthy winnings being overall the better team.
It could have been different had the two Horsham strikers had better aim with their shots. Both Billy Medlock and Gary Charman had a number of chances to test Thurrock keeper Wil Viner but there shots were normally high are wide of the target.
In the 36th minute Thurrock took the lead with a move that started in their own half, the ball was pushed forward on the right flank were Leroy Griffiths teased his marked before sending over a cross for Fola Orilonishe to run onto, his defender was the wrong side and as Orilonishe moved towards the target his shot went under the advancing keeper, Michael Hunter, and intro the back of the net.
Horsham slumped back on their heels after the goal but Thurrock failed to capitalise on their possession before the half time break.
Within the first two minutes of the second half we saw Thurrock sustain another injury to their small squad. Jack Jefferies went into a 50/50 tackle and came out 100% worse off with a twisted angle and cut shin and was replaced by Luke Wannadio.
Thurrock had two debutants in their back four, Matt Turpin at centre back and Richie Jones at right back both had to earn their money in this second period as Horsham pushed forward and threatened to get an equaliser.
Thurrock managed to take advantage of Horsham pushing forward and in the 76th minute a long ball punted out of midfield found Charlie Stimson free in acres of space and beating the offside trap with just the keeper to beat, he rounded the keeper and had an open goal to blast home Thurrock’s second goal.
Horsham kept battling and as time was running out Thurrock increasingly pulled back to defend allowing Horsham to threaten their goal with a number of corners one of which hit the near post with everyone ball watching.
Eventually Horsham got their consolation goal in what looked like a pin ball machine in the Thurrock box, the ball was kick and deflected from attacker to defender before a strike from Gary Charman rolled through a number of legs and just over the goal line in the 94th minute.
