FA Trophy 1st Qualifying Round
Romford 1 v 3 Thurrock
Bill Robinson reports from Ship Lane………..
This quirky situation of Landlords playing their tenants away but on their own ground threw up some interesting situations, and with Thurrock not having won a Trophy cup match since 2005 all faith was put into manager Mark Stimson whose own FA trophy record is impressive enough to give Thurrock the edge.
But Romford didn’t look like a side to be overrun and after Fola Orilonishe missed a great chance in the 8th minute the home side grew in confidence and started finding gaps in the Thurrock defence.
Ryan Imbert was impressive and came close when shooting straight at Will Viner in the Thurrock goal after being put through by Nick Reynolds and again minutes later he was thwarted by the extended toe of Matt Turpin just as he was about to shoot close to goal.
Thurrock were looking as if they could poach a goal against the run of play and Charlie Stimson’swent close when he shot into the side netting when turning in the area after a free kick had fallen kindly.
In the 57th minute Romford took the lead, from a free kick Thurrock conceded a corner which was taken by Lewis Francis as the ball bounced Clayton headed onto Barry and his cross was tapped in by Ryan Imbert.
Romford only held their advantage for ten minutes when Thurrock equalised. A free kick started the move some 25 yards from goal, taken by Stuart Thurgood, his powerfull cross was met in the centre of the area by the head of centre back Matt Turpin who directed the ball into the back of the net.
Thurrock were now back in the game only to be reduced to ten men when Mark Onyenma brought down Imbert ad received a second yellow card.
Manager Mark Stimson made a quick substitution bringing Ben Walster on to fill the gap in the back four, but Thurrock momentum continued and when Charlie Stimson fired home number two on 81minutes from inside the box a Thurrock win was on the cards.
Romford pushed forward looking to even the score and in the 90+3 minute Shamir Mullings came on as a sub and his first touch exploited the gaps left by Romford and sent Leroy Griffiths through their defence putting him one on one with keeper Atu Ngoy and Griffiths calmly sided footed the ball past the keeper for number three.
