Life on the ocean wave for Ormiston students

INTREPID students from three Ormiston Academies joined forces to sail from Poole to Plymouth.
The ten students from Ormiston Park Academy in Thurrock, Ormiston Rivers Academy in Burnham on Crouch and Ormiston Maritime Academy in Grimsby lived on board the Ocean Youth Trust‘s 72-foot yacht John Laing for a week.
Ocean Youth Trust aims to give young people a sailing experience designed to develop confidence, team-working, the ability to cope with unfamiliar situations, and tolerance and understanding of others.
The young crew members sailed the boat, kept watch, helped to navigate and enhanced their cooking skills, with everyone taking a turn at meal preparation.
Organised by Ormiston Park Academy teacher Sarah-Jane Tredinnick who is a volunteer at the Ocean Youth Trust, the trip gave the students a chance to learn valuable life skills, interact with other Ormiston students and gain the Royal Yachting Association’s ‘start yachting’ qualification.
Ormiston Academies Trust aims to create a network of inspirational and inclusive schools and academies who share the same values and this trip is a great example of how different academies can work together and share their resources and experiences.
Sarah-Jane said: “Living in close quarters, sleeping in berths, cleaning the yacht and cooking for the rest of the crew took students out of their comfort zones and helped them gain new skills. This is a great adventure for students and it was great for us to meet students from other academies and find out a bit more about different cultures.”
Ormiston Park Academy students Elizabeth Chintua-Chigbu and Lauren Ward both took part in the trip.
Elizabeth said: “The staff treated everyone equally and fairly, they were caring towards us and asked if anything bothered us. We got to control the boat and we planned our own route. We were treated with respect and like responsible people.”
Lauren said: “I had a great time on the sailing trip, the staff treated us fairly and the people we met you could get along with them easily. I loved it when it was my birthday because they made me cake. I have learned a lot about sailing e.g. knots, how to do the sails etc. I would love to do it again in the future.”
