ST LUKE’S Hospice shops are urging people to donate their old shoes to help keep the Hospice running!
Their recent ‘Hospice Care Week’ campaign highlighted the inspiring and personal way that St. Luke’s Hospice helps people living with terminal illness improve the quality of their life, and how support extends to their family, their carers and entire community.
Head of Revenue Development at St. Luke’s Marilyn Debattista said: ‘We believe that Hospice care is not just about our buildings – it’s about people and our community and the support we give to each other. Hospice care week was a focus point for us to think about St. Luke’s and what it means to each of us.
“We are so grateful for the tremendous support our community gives to us, we have Hospice shops throughout the Basildon and Thurrock area, each of our shops are part of the local community and St. Luke’s is a reflection of community generosity’’
During the week St. Luke’s highlighted the hospice in a number of ways one of which is asking people to support us by donating their unwanted shoes.
Valerie Lawley Manager of the Hospice’s Pitsea shop explained ‘’We wanted to offer something that our whole community can get involved with. Everyone has shoes they no longer want – shoes that are lurking in the back of the wardrobe that you will never wear again or even shoes that are not fit to wear any more and are due to be thrown out, – they will all raise money for St. Luke’s as those that are unfit for resale in our shops are re-cycled and currently we receive £8.50 for 10 kilos (approx a black bin liner full): it doesn’t matter if they are odd shoes, trainers or wellington boots with holes, adults or children’s – Your unwanted shoes can keep your hospice running !’’
It cost just over £3 million pounds to keep all hospice services running 24/7 which equates to around £6.25 for every minute of the day and night – so one full black sack of shoes will help the hospice run for well over a full minute:
