Hate crime investigation following Grays Athletic match
Date posted: 24-10-2012
POLICE are investigating an allegation of hate crime after it was alleged that a black Potters Bar Town footballer with hearing and speech difficulties was abused by Grays Athletic fans.
Herts Constabulary were called at 9.30pm on Tuesday night to the ground at Watkins Rise as the Ryman Division One North match was drawing to a close.
A Herts Constabulary spokesperson said: “We received a report that disturbance was on-going at the ground involving around seventy fans.
Officers attended at the ground and took a complaint that fans of Grays Athletic had verbally abused a Potters Bar player who had both hearing and speech impairments.
“We are treating this as a hate crime and have passed the matter on to the FA.”
YT understands that the Potters Bar player is Daniel Ailey. Last year, Mr Ailey played for the Great Britain deaf football team in the European Champs.
YT has contacted Grays Athletic but they have yet to issue a statement.
