A TIME capsule has been planted at intu Lakeside to capture the memories of employees working at the popular retail and leisure destination.
Over 200 employees’ fond memories of the centre have been captured and sealed in a time capsule located near the 225,000 sq ft development which opens next year. The time capsule also includes letters from students at Harris Primary Academy Chafford Hundred, who have written their memorable moments spent at intu Lakeside. Antonia Ellard, the school’s assistant principle, head boy and head girl, alongside Councillor Qaisar Abbas and the Deputy Mayor Terry Picollo attended the landmark occasion.
intu Lakeside will reopen its time capsule to the public in 50 years’ time to mark almost 80 years since the centre opened its doors.
Howard Oldstein, regional centre director at intu Lakeside, said: “The time capsule is another example of how our talented people use their understanding of intu Lakeside and its customers to create a special shopping experience. Most employees have worked at the centre for many years and have great memories of being part of the team, whilst bringing joy to customers each day, and we wanted to capture those special memories. We also wanted to engage the local community who have been a huge part of our success. This is a very special moment for us and shows just how the centre is evolving and continues to be a vibrant focal point of the community.”
intu has invested significantly in the flagship destination over the last decade including developing the Boardwalk, creating a new food court for an aspirational new dining experience, and building a Travelodge which opened on the shore of the lake last year. This has created a long-lasting and positive change by delivering skills and employment, with the centre supporting 7,861 jobs* and contributing over £200 million to the local economy.
In 2019, the £72 million leisure development at intu Lakeside will open its doors with a Nickelodeon family entertainment centre and a host of other leisure names including Hollywood Bowl, Flip Out and Puttshack.
