Police make further appeal over fatal collision in South Ockendon

ESSEX Police are looking for two further witnesses to a fatal collision in South Ockendon on New Year’s Eve.

Cyclist Alexandru Matei, 43, of Buckles Lane, sadly died in Arisdale Avenue following the incident, which is believed to have happened just after 7.50pm on January 31, 2018.

We believe there were two other people in the area at the time who may have seen the collision but have not yet spoken to our officers.

The first is described as a black man, who may be aged in his teens, who was walking behind a young girl just before the incident. He is believed to have been talking on his phone at the time.

The second witnesses is a man who was sat in a grey car near to the Next distribution centre around the time of the collision. It is believed there were shopping bags in the back seat.

They are asked to call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 101, quoting incident number 971 of December 31.

Ravinder Matharu, 31, of Erriff Drive, South Ockendon has been charged with causing death while disqualified from driving, causing death while insured, causing death by aggravated vehicle taking, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and failing to report an accident.

He is next due to appear at Basildon Crown Court on January 31.
