The owner awoke in the early hours of Sunday to find their Jaguar XF and Ford Kuga missing from the driveway.

Less than two hours later, three men were reported to have arrived in Norfolk Road, Upminster, in a Ford Kuga and were acting suspiciously.

It was found to be the stolen car with false numberplates, which had been taken from another car in Laindon overnight.

Smith was arrested nearby while other officers and a police dog searched for Broomhead and Harris.

A police helicopter spotted the pair hiding underneath a car. Broomhead attempted to jump onto a garage but fell and was arrested.
Harris was detained nearby.

All three were charged with burglary, two counts of theft of a motor vehicle and theft.

Smith pleaded guilty at Basildon Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 30 April and Broomhead and Harris admitted the charges at Basildon Crown Court on Tuesday 28 May. All three were sentenced on Thursday 4 July.

Broomhead, 19, of Raleigh Drive, Laindon, was detained for two-and-a-half years in a young offender institution and Harris, 19, of Steeplehall, Pitsea, was sentenced to three years detention.

Smith, 22, of Arne Court, Laindon, was given two years detention, suspended for two years, and ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work and 30 hours of rehabilitation activity.
