Inspired by the 2012 Olympics Thurrock Mencap Society held their very own “Olympic Style” sports day on Sunday 1 July at Thurrock Harriers.

The society would like to thank all the participants, spectators, helpers and everybody involved in making our sports day a truly outstanding success. The day started with a parade led by the Havering Haverettes Marching Band who then entertained with an exceptional performance.

The aim of the sports day was fun and enjoyment for all and to integrate with other youth groups and the community, this was a great success, our members with learning and physical disabilities were enthusiastically supported and encouraged by all the youth groups and helpers, it was a pleasure to watch them helping and encouraging our members to ensure they had a wonderful day. Events included long jump, running and cycling plus archery, shotput, basketball, skittles, football, wellie wanging and culminated with a fun football match.

They would like to give special thanks to Hew Watt Charitable Trust for their generous funding and Thurrock Harriers for their support and allowing us to hold the event on their track also to Grays Detachment,’A’ Company, Essex Army Cadet Force and Thurrock Explorers for their enthusiasm and support for our members.

They will be holding our next sports day in 2014 and would be grateful for any help and support with this project.
