AROUND 150,000 people in the UK have a stroke each year. The Stroke Project supports and empowers stroke survivors in Thurrock by providing information and advice, access to support groups and specialist post-stroke exercise programmes.
For stroke survivors, movement therapy is key and has been shown to have a great impact on the brain and nervous system’s capacity to renew and re-wire. With this in mind, the Thurrock Stroke Project requested help from Lakeside’s Heart of the Community fund to purchase some table tennis equipment to aid stroke survivors’ recovery.
Chris Hamilton, Project Worker at Thurrock Stroke Project said, “Providing activities and support to local stroke survivors is at the heart of what we do. This new equipment from Lakeside will enhance the specialist exercise programmes that we offer and make a real difference to the project. Lakeside’s Heart of the Community campaign supports two local causes every month with £500 donations. Members of the community are invited to nominate worthy charities and local groups that could benefit from a donation.
