Aveley Conservative Councillor Amanda Prevost said: “We fought hard to get this public inquiry so that the decision could be made by an independent inspector. I was shocked and angry when I walked in on the first day to discover that there would be no official representation from Thurrock Council. There were legal teams from the Thames Gateway Development Corporation (who are backing the development) and Havering Council who are barely affected by it, but Thurrock could not come up with anything apart from a written submission.

Police and Thurrock Council were out in force on Tuesday, May 17, cracking down on car traders posing as private sellers who leave vehicles for sale at the side of the road. The vehicles which often have hand written signs in the windows cause a nuisance, obstructions and also affect legitimate car traders. Officers from South Ockendon neighbourhood policing team joined Thurrock Council’s Community Protection Team, and worked together in a number of areas around Thurrock.
THE FIRE SERVICE did, after they were called to Cely Woods,Romford Road, Aveley when they were called to assist in the rescue of two small dogs trapped down a rabbit hole. Working with the advice of a park ranger, crews dug in to free the animals while taking care not to disturb any badger setts.
One of their key concerns was the 200 plus lorry movement per day plus damage to wildlife, loss of green space and a general worsening of quality of life for residents of Watts Wood. Whilst cllr Herd said: “The area was not identified in the Master Plan.”
SOMETIMES WE wonder if Aveley councillor, Wendy Herd must feel like King Canute. Year after year, Wendy appears in various parts of her ward attempting to stem the tide of planning applications submitted to the Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation (DC). Cllr Herd as some satisfaction in that the DC will cease to exist in ten months time but until then she will continue to fight the good fight.
AS WE wake up to the news that Osama Bin Laden has been killed, spare a thought for the Aveley Lance Corporal who three years ago, gave his life so that one day, we all would wake up to this news.
In a visit arrange by local Councillor Amanda Prevost and MP Jackie Doyle-Price, members of the Youth Council had a tour of the home of british democracy and gained an insight in how government works. Mind you it wasn’t all hard work. As they day was sunny and they had a bit of time on their hands, they also got to see Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and other London sights.
THE THREE DAY music festival planned for the Essex Sports Village in Purfleet Road, Aveley has been cancelled. YT understands that the financial backer and former owner of Grays Athletic, Mick Woodward has written to the local residents. The event, ear-marked for the August Bank Holiday weekend, had hoped to have Katherine Jenkins, Westlife and Boyzone.
A total of 175 units of alcohol (equivalent to 76 pints of normal lager) were seized during the evening which saw around 20 stop checks on young people. One arrest was also made for an alleged breach of bail conditions. Investigations are now continuing with all those involved to decide on further action and potential prosecutions.
EX-GRAYS ATHLETIC owner Mick Woodward has emerged from the shadows to reveal himself as the major financial backer to a three day music festival at the Essex Sports Village on Purfleet Road, Aveley. Mr Woodward and entertainments supremo Dave Clark (no not that one) met with concerned residents at the club last night.
The band will be performing during the day at the bandstand in Hyde Park, both before and after the ceremony. The former Grand Shield winners will play a variety of music with a special emphasis on ‘The Best of British.’
Treasurer, Joe Dark said: “We had £20,000 pounds worth of refurbishments to make. Through Andy Furze and the Veoila Mardyke Trust they helped us with £8,000 worth of improvements and repairs, most significantly the ditches round the side of the green.
Speaking after the meeting, Aveley councillor, Wendy Herd said: “We are all ecstatic. To us, the proposals, on so many levels, were very poorly thought out. From bins, to roundabouts, to infrastructure, to flood provision. We are delighted that the DC thought the same.

WHEN THE Class of 2010 walked down Nethan Drive for their first day at school, it was called Aveley comprehensive., It then changed its name to Belhus Chase. Now it is Ormiston Park Academy (OPA). The school is changing and moving forward. What is clear is that they couldn’t have done it without the class of 2010, who according to inspirational headteacher, Tess Walker, have been the trailblazers!
