THURROCK has had some interesting visitors over the last few weeks in the form of decorative elephant statues on their way to intu Lakeside. These beautiful hand painted elephants are part of a 30-strong herd that is making its way across Essex to the shopping centre in Thurrock.
SINCE the final of Elite Model Look, May Bell has been busy juggling exams and modelling. She has been working with Topshop and Stella McCartney and shooting with i-D magazine, Wonderland and Ponystep with photographers such as Ellen Von Unwerth and Letty Schmiterlow. You can also see her beautiful face in this month’s Topshop Prom campaign! May will be joining the team on the 11th so shoppers will be able meet her and quiz her on how to be an Elite supermodel.
THE public spaces will host an exciting events programme which may include farmers’ and Christmas markets, street theatre, music shows and live screenings of big sporting events throughout the year. The spaces can also be used to host some of intu’s events which have a strong point of difference to those you may find at other shopping centres, such as Everyone’s Invited which works with the local community to showcase talents within the arts.
INTU, the UK’s biggest shopping centre brand, launched a campaign to celebrate mums up and down the country by encouraging shoppers to take to Twitter. With Mother’s Day fast approaching, intu Lakeside is hoping to find out why shoppers believe they have the very best mum and all the reasons that they love them.
INTU, which owns the Lakeside shopping centre in Thurrock, has more than doubled pre-tax profit following a year when it “advanced significantly”.
Intu posted a pre-tax profit of £362.9m for the year to 31 December 2013 – up from £152.6m a year earlier. The rise followed a revaluation of its estate.
THE UK’s number one children’s author, David Walliams, visited Thurrock last week for an exclusive storytelling session with members of the intu Lakeside kids club. Reading from his bestselling children’s books Ratburger, Demon Dentist and The Slightly Annoying Elephant, David’s visit marked the launch of the shopping centre’s charity partnership with the National Literacy Trust.
ORIGINALLY designed as a one-month venture to coincide with the introduction of the shopping centre’s new intu brand (which features the same shade of bright orange), the bus proved to be so popular with people in the local area that intu Lakeside made the decision to keep it on the road for much longer. Its ownership was also kept a mystery until now so it could continue to serve as a fun conversation starter rather than becoming part of the centre’s wider advertising strategy.
intu Lakeside’s youngest ever shopper was born yesterday when her mother went into labour in the shopping centre and gave birth at approximately 5pm on a cordoned off section of the mall. While waiting for an ambulance to arrive, baby Deborah was born with the support of intu Lakeside security officer Maggie Webb and the team, before being taken to hospital for a full check-up.
STAFF from intu Lakeside dug out their tools and gardening gloves and lent a hand on a construction project in Canvey Island to create a new community space within a social housing estate. intu Lakeside also donated £3,000 to Cash for Kids, the Magic 105.4 charity coordinating the project, to develop the ‘Pocket Play’ area. INTU Lakeside announced what’s hot on the nation’s Christmas list this year, after asking its shoppers to take to Twitter as part of the very first digital ‘twishlist’. Maintaining the technology theme, the search found that the tech savvy shoppers most want an iPad 2 this Christmas, allowing them to enjoy all their favourite entertainment on the go.

IN order to tackle the problem, over the next 8 to 10 weeks bin crews and Council officers will be carrying out more random bin checks. Where contaminated recycling is discovered, the bin will not be emptied but an advisory hanger placed on it to remind people of what they can and cannot recycle.
THE centre will welcome shoppers for even longer from Monday 2nd December, remaining open from 9am to 11pm on weekdays and from 9am to 10pm on Saturdays. Longer opening hours mean intu Lakeside shoppers can visit the centre’s 250+ shops, cafes and restaurants (including Debenhams, House of Fraser, Apple, Superdry and Primark) truly at their convenience, while enjoying new ones such as 360 Champagne & Cocktails and Lakeland, too.
DURING the first two weeks of December, and in no more than 140 characters, intu shoppers will be asked to take to Twitter and reveal, using #Twishlist, what they would most like to receive on the 25th December, via @intuLakeside. Their Christmas Twishlist can include gifts that are available at intu shopping centres across any category (including travel, fashion, beauty, garden, home and technology), online at intu.co.uk and can include Twishes for friends and family too.
ESSEX Police and intu Lakeside are once again working together to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience is had by all that visit the centre in the run up to Christmas. Operation Christmas Presence launched today and will see extra officers working closely with the intu Lakeside security team on patrols at key times of the day to deter anyone intent on committing crime and ensure that criminals do not visit the area during the busy shopping period.
360 Champagne & Cocktails has opened at intu Lakeside, offering a slice of the high life to shoppers. Based right in the heart of the shopping centre, the bar offers 120 seats, a bar magician, flaring bartenders and a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, plus sweet and savoury snacks such as cupcakes, afternoon tea, artisan breads and olives.

Prior to joining intu Lakeside, Kate gained a wealth of retail experience at Selfridges in London. Having spent 16 years with the world famous department store, Kate most recently held the position of Central Operations Manager, overseeing large scale back-of-house and refurbishment projects, planning and managing peak and key trading periods (such as sale and Christmas) and supporting the launch of Selfridge’s transactional website.
INTU Lakeside was transformed into a student haven last Wednesday as the shopping centre hosted its first ever student night. Between 6pm and 10pm, over 4,000 students made the most of this rare opportunity to scoop up exclusive discounts from intu Lakeside’s shops and restaurants.
intu Lakeside has been celebrating Customer Service Week 2013 with a jam-packed schedule full of fun, freebies and all-round merriment to showcase the very best in Customer Service. intu Lakeside staff treated shoppers to a host of delights to mark the occasion and put their intu World Class Service training to full effect. From ‘little bags of loveliness’ filled with goodies from the stores to a raft of discounts and free samples, all the stops were pulled out to ensure customers felt special and experienced that extra level of service from the centre.
INTU Lakeside hosted a series of fashion shows with a difference on Saturday 5th October featuring garments designed and created by Chelmsford College Art & Design students. Each item was created from recycled bags donated by many of the centre’s shops, including Primark, Forever 21 and Debenhams.
INTU Lakeside hosted its annual recruitment fair this weekend with temporary and permanent roles at the shopping centre on offer for all. It was the 10th year of the recruitment fair – hosted by the centre’s on-site agency, C&C Recruitment – and once again it was a popular event with over 2,500 job hunters in attendance.
INTU Lakeside in Essex hosted the first Speedo Open Water National Relays on Sunday 22nd September and judging by the fantastic response to the innovative concept it is a team event which is likely to grow in popularity in years to come.
INTU Lakeside is offering students free transport to the event via complimentary buses that will run to and from the University of Essex campus in Colchester via Chelmsford. Select lucky students who attend the event will also leave with a free goody bag packed full of treats.
INTU Lakeside is introducing a new scheme to stamp out illegal and inconsiderate parking and ensure designated spaces for disabled shoppers and parents with children are kept free for the right people. With 13,000 free parking spaces to manage, minimising congestion and maximising safety remains a key focus for the shopping centre and this new initiative is expected to vastly improve shoppers’ experience of visiting by car.
THE exciting new leisure development will create a series of outdoor spaces, the focal point of which will be a large town square around which a wide range of new leisure and restaurant uses will be provided over two levels.
