CHADWELL BOXING club Olympic boxing hopeful Nina Smith has had her dream of fighting for GB at this years games counted out.

The 29-year-old from Grays has lost her place at British Boxing’s national training centre at Sheffield and so ruling her out for the Under-51kg category.

Boxing chiefs have indicated the decision was due to a lack of progress at the very elite level.

Nina, only took the sport up four years ago and was in the same weight category as the vastly experienced Nicola Adams.

Adams is a former world amateur double silver medallist and is current European gold medal holder.

YT understands that Smith still plans to compete in boxing’s world champs in China in May.

Kieran Redding also progressed into the next round by beating Luke Law of Rosehill 20-9 on points with a strong jab before putting his opponent to the canvas. Kieran meets the talented Charlie Driscoll of West Ham in the next round. Unfortunately Kevin Reavell could not make it three out of three for Chadwell St Mary who came up against a really strong experienced boxer named Hayden Bulloch of Crawley but his coaches were really pleased with his performance and he proved he was worthy of a spot in the championships and this will just strengthen his chances for the future championships.

TWO OF Thurrock’s emerging stars have bee nominated for BBC Essex young sports person of the year.

Joshua Olaware from Ormiston Park Academy and Michael Moloney from Gateway Academy are up for the Sports Essex prize which will be announced live on BBC Essex on Thursday November 17th.

They were both nominated by club members. Here are their nominations.

Joshua Olaware

“Joshua is an extremely talented athlete who was won four national medals, including two gold medals, in four separate events this year, earning him selection for the English Schools team at an indoor competition in Glasgow this December.

Nationally Joshua won the English Schools Intermediate Boys’ Octathlon Championships at Exeter on 17th & 18th September winning three of the eight individuals events (long jump, 100m hurdles and shot) and setting a new club record points total of 5200 points which ranks him number 1 in the UK this year.

By comparison that is almost on a par with Britain’s last great international combined event athlete Dean Macey who scored 5311 points at the same age.

In August at the England Athletics championships at Bedford Joshua won the long jump with a new personal best and club record of 7.20m, and at the same championships he also won a bronze medal in the 100m hurdles in another personal best & club record. Indoors last winter he won a silver medal at triple jump in the National Under 17 championships and was fourth in the 60m hurdles event.

At county & Regional Joshua won indoor titles at 60m hurdles & long jump, and followed up with county outdoor titles at 100m hurdles and long jump, and Essex Schools title at Triple Jump. Joshua is a potential Great Britain international athlete and winning this award would provide added incentive for him to work hard towards the next level of achievement at U20 (Junior Level).”

Michael Moloney

“I am nominating young Michael Moloney because I feel his personality deserves acknowledgement. Michael is a sixteen your old boy who demonstrates great maturity in our gym as well as in the field of amateur boxing. Michael has achieved so much in the time he has been a member of Chadwell St Mary A.B.C. He is a Schoolboy Champion, Three nations Champion and a junior A.B.A Champion. “Mikey” is a very well liked boy in the gym on the boxing circuit as well as in the local community.

Mikey is dedicated to the sport and trains very hard at every opportunity (including christmas day). Mikey is a great team member and helps everybody in the gym especially the youngsters, he is a brilliant mentor.

Mikey has also learnt to read and write through interaction with other members of the gym and by access of the boxing forum warrior. Mikey even travelled to New York with the Essex A.B.A. This is a massive achievement for such a young boy who comes from a very close family and is never far from his grandfather. Mikey is an absolute star and a very deservent nominee.”

The ‘Heroes’ boxing night, which is being held at Liquid nightclub, Festival Leisure Park, Basildon, follows on from the first successful event organised by Lions Boxing and Fitness Gym, Chelmsford, in April. The ‘Cops V Robbers’ event raised a significant amount of money for St Francis Hospice.

Now officers from Basildon, Thurrock and Southend, will take part in a total of 19 matched fights, and will see the ‘Cops V Robbers’ champion, Pc Jordan Pascal from Thurrock return to the ring brimming with confidence with hopes to build on his success in April.

The event also includes an Inter-Counties women’s Championship semi-final.

Chadwell St Mary A.B.C Boxer Michael Maloney 15yrs 57kg of Biggin Lane in Tilbury smashed his way into the finals of the National Junior Amateur Boxing Association Championships to be held on the 21st and 22nd of May at The Passion Night Club in Rochester Kent.

Maloney came up against the very feisty Rumbles Boxing Academy Kane Ball AKA “The Raging Bull “.

This bout the fourth of the day in Ring B had the crowds on their feet. Maloney dropped Ball in the first round with a fast combination of perfectly timed shots one of which hit right on the button to see Ball on the canvas.

The courageous Kent boxer Ball took the mandatory standing eight count and continued to give a very gutsy performance in the next two rounds of the semi-final bout against our local boxer.

Maloney proved to be too fast, sharp as well as too strong for the very gutsy Rumbles Academy boxer as he totally out classed his enthusiastic opponent with a display of talented boxing impressing the crowd by his natural ability to adapt smoothly his boxing stance from south paw to orthodox in what was a very fast paced bout.

Maloney meets Jake James of Northside ABC (Manchester) in the finals in two weeks time. This will be the second time the boxers have come head to head in a final as they boxed in the finals of the Schoolboy Championships last year with Maloney beating the very experienced Manchester Boxer. Mikey’s Chadwell St Mary coach Scot Johnston is by no means taking the preparation for the next bout against The very experienced Jake James of Manchester lightly but he said Maloney is on fire!

Unfortunately for Chadwell St Mary boxer Matt McCarthy 17yrs 67kg the decision did not go his way on the day and the Judges gave the bout in favor of Andrew Doe from Tommy’s Gym in Reading. McCarthy caught Doe in the second round with a straight right hand and Doe proved to have a very strong chin but McCarthy just was not able to pin down the very tricky Doe as he made use of the ring to escape the power of McCarthy’s shots.

The local boxing gym in Longhouse Road Chadwell St Mary is now also the host of five Essex Novice Championship boxers in Kieran Wright, Barney Moloney, Johnny Doherty,

Billy Wilson and Kevin Reavell as they all received winner certificates and badges at the Championships held at the Hutton Center in Brentwood.

The stars of the show were Kieran Wright 12yrs 32kg of Gateway Academy winner of the under 5 bout class. Kieran boxed superbly using a tight guard to secure himself a unanamous decision win over Dagenham ABC boxer Kerim Agius and George Hart 12yrs 38kg of Gable Hall School who drew the unlucky straw by boxing in the semi-final and not gaining a walk over like his team mates. Hart gave a gutsy performance but was beaten in the semi finals by the Chalvedon ABC boxer Tyler O’Flynn.

Youngster Levi Lee 12yrs 46kg was too experienced to be entered into the Championships and his club was hoping to be able to get him matched as a supporting bout on the same day. There is nobody to box Levi in Essex and Chadwell St Mary A.B.C are aware that they will have to start travelling further up North to match the very talented young boxer.

Chadwell St Mary Amateur Boxing Club were celebrating three wins last week.

First to box was 12 year old Gateway Academy schoolboy Levi Lee 44kg.

Lee traveled alongside his coach/uncle to box on the Golden Ring Open Show in Southampton.

Levi boxed against the strong Johnny Chicken from Golden Ring A.B.C for the second time. ( Lee secured a unanimous win on the last bout by out boxing and picking off the very strong brawler).

Chicken’s club had done their homework in preparation for the return bout and Chicken came flying at Lee in the first round enabling him to push
the Chadwell St Mary boxer onto the ropes with three successful hard and accurate body shots, Lee was saved by the bell.

After a display of great coaching/ prompting from his coach Scot Johnston at the end of the first round, Lee was then able to come back out for the second and third round and give the crowd an outstanding performance of controlled, clever and skilled boxing securing himself yet another unanimous win against the very strong lad from Southampton.

The other two wins came on the same night from the Brentwood Youth open show held at Keys Hall in Brentwood.

Chadwell St. Mary boxer George Hart 12 years 38.5kg gave a fine display of talented controlled boxing against the heavier Chalvedon boxer Nathan Lucas securing himself a majority points decision.

Kevin Reavell 15years 57kg boxed against George Wright of Southend A.B.C and also won by a majority decision.
