UPDATE: How ironic! The day my blog about DLA is posted I get the decision on my appeal – another rejection.

The reports from the psychiatrist and my GP contained factual errors but who’s going to believe me? No-one, that’s who.

I’m probably going to have the same problem when I’m forced to apply for ESA thanks to the benefit changes. Chalk up another victim for the system.

Who will mourn for me when I can’t support myself financially? No-one! And there’s a perverse irony in that, isn’t there?

I had help filling in the DLA form by someone trained in how to fill the form in most effectively. He had a 98% success rate. My claim was rejected.

My appeal is being supported by an advocate with specialist knowledge of clinical risk assessment/management but I’m still not holding out any hope of success.

I have had no help at all from mental health services. I’ve no CPN and no care co-ordinator as I’m a ‘higher functioning’ patient.

I have some friends and family with serious mental health conditions and they have been lucky enough to receive sensitive and effective support and help with claiming DLA. This help has been from their Community Psychiatric Nurse, or staff at the hospital where they have been patients.
I do hope Myles is getting support from someone like this, or from the experienced voluntary organisations who can help.

Abbie, did you even read Mr Vinall’s piece? You got completely the wrong end of the stick. It was the local politicians who made an issue out of students not getting into good universities, that’s why Mr Vinall was compelled to respond. He also did not in any way demean Russell Group Uni’s, he was merely stating that, for some students, the best course for them is run elsewhere. Abbie, as you responded using the term ‘we’ can I take it that you are one of the local imcompetents to whom I referred in my first post?

Abbie Blogger – you have somewhat misinterpreted the point of Mr Vinall’s response which was to celebrate all 520 students who had progressed to HE, not just those that went to the Russell Group (and maybe that YourThurrock have also got it wrong because York and Durham as Mr Vinall explains, are not in the Russell Group; though this is a minor error on their part it shows a lack of understanding. Mr Vinall is very clear in that he celebrated ALL those who go to Oxbridge, other Russell Group universities and all the other universities.
If anything he seems frustrated with people playing politics with the achievements of our young people who he rightly points out have done very well at Palmer’s and are a credit to the borough which should be more proud of them.

Just who denotes which university is good and which is not, we are all too bogged down with league tables from Primary schools to Universities, regardless of where you do your further education if you put in the time and effort you will gain good grades; unfortunatley what a lot of universities fail to do is to educate the pupils on the real world as too may graduates seem to think that they will come out of Uni and walk into a high position job, these days are now over and they may need to work from the bottom up.

gray64 – you seem to have missed the point of these recent articles/statistics. We are in no way implying that Palmer’s doesn’t offer a good education and that Palmer’s doesn’t send students to universities, just not those deemed “good” universities by official league boards. It is not our local politicians, but a plethora of independent research which determines what the best universities are. Unfortunately, statements like Mr Vinall’s, demean those who do get into these “good universities.”

Comment from Charlotte Woods, Palmer’s Student 2009-2011. I would just like to make a comment on this article because I feel Palmer’s aided my progression into a Russell Group university. I currently attend King’s College London, studying for a BA in English Language and Communication and I feel Palmer’s helped me to reach my potential by providing an excellent library with helpful staff and additional student facilities to help with some more pressing issues for students such as time management and revision. Furthermore, Palmer’s prepared me well for all the challenges that university life offers by advising me to take extra courses such as the Extended Project Qualification, not only did this help to gain an offer from the university but it meant I had an experience of what the work load would be like. Furthermore, by being involved in all the links Palmer’s has with the surrounding area I was able to gain experience in the field of journalism, which not only means that the portfolio for my future career began at an early age, but I am now a student reporter for the King’s College newspaper. I would like to also take this opportunity to thank Palmer’s for how they have started my higher educational journey.

Why dont Thurrock council actually listen to the local Police, they have said that these zones do not work but still they press ahead with them, there are not enough police on the beat to maintain these areas, indeed I have personally witnessed several breaches of the zones where the police have just drove by.

It is not just the Tories that dont listen even the Labour councillors seem to ignore the advice and the fact these are unmanageable.

Hmmm, “All companies did their best to keep commuters updated” you were obviously not on the C2C train this morning then, yes the driver was giving some info but the tannoy was not loud enough to hear, staff at Grays never made one announcment, got turfed off at Barking and told to use the train on platform 8, that train was also terminated at Barking, had to find where the next train was myself as the staff were non existant.

Whilst the train service is 95% perfect C2C customer service leaves a lot to be desired.

Mr Vinall, please don’t take any notice of our local politicians. They are, by and large, a bunch of incompetents and idiots. My son is in his last year at Palmers and has been offered places in all of the Uni’s he has applied for and one of them is a Russell Group Uni (Leeds). As it happens, it isn’t his first choice but he has been given the opportunity to go there via the excellence of his education at Palmers for which I, as a proud Dad, thank you.

Funny how diversity matters so much to the liberal minded, but not when it comes to political viewpoint. Only their opinion is allowed! A voice for nationalism is useful in any democracy.
