Stephen Metcalfe, Prospective Conservative Member of Parliament for South Basildon and East Thurrock, has expressed grave concern following the recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) at Basildon University Hospital.
Stephen commented: “I am very disturbed by these shocking revelations and the effect that the conditions at Basildon University Hospital may have had on patients. This brings into question the nature of inspecting our hospitals and the system that was in place when Basildon University Hospital was originally inspected.
“I have no doubt that the staff are extremely hard working and everyone involved with Basildon and Thurrock NHS Trust will want to take immediate action to address these issues. The CQC who carried out a further unannounced inspection clearly found evidence of sub-standard care – a fact which proves that the former inspection methods were not up to the job.
“I welcome anything that can be done to improve patient care for residents of Basildon and Thurrock. Hygiene in any hospital is a basic expectation, not a luxury. I sincerely hope that the CQCs proposed reforms will prevent anything like this happening again.”
