Keeping up with school work at Basildon hospital

Young patients at Basildon University Hospital can keep up with their school work and have fun, thanks to kind shoppers who donate their Tesco and Sainsbury’s vouchers.

In previous years, thousands of vouchers have been used to buy equipment for the hospital schoolroom, playroom and wards, to provide children with entertainment and support with their education while they are in hospital.

Veronica Buttigieg, hospital school teacher, said: “Last year we collected 96,000 Tesco vouchers and 24,000 from Sainsbury’s.

“It is wonderful that so many members of the public are kind enough to collect their vouchers for us. We really appreciate their support, and also the fantastic hard work of hospital volunteer, Brian Jiggens, who over the years has collected tens of thousands of vouchers for us.

“Last year we bought two new laptops for children to use who are unable to leave their bed, a camcorder and tripod for film-making projects, arts and crafts materials, board games and sensory equipment. The aim of the hospital school is to keep our young patients up to date with their studies and to provide some fun and normality for those coping with health problems.”

There are donation boxes in the Main Reception, Outpatients Department, and in the entrance to the Maternity Unit. Alternatively, you can post your vouchers to Veronica Buttigieg, The Hospital School Room, Children’s Wards, Basildon University Hospital, Nethermayne, Basildon, Essex SS16 5NL.
