Keogh Review: Reaction from Basildon and Brentwood CCG

BASILDON and Brentwood Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has been fully involved in the Keogh Review process. The CCG has provided information, attended the Keogh team’s Rapid Responsive Review visit to Basildon Hospital, participated in the risk summit and commented on the final report. We agree with and support the key findings contained in the report, available at

The Keogh Rapid Responsive Review report has acknowledged that Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Trust is undergoing significant transformation and that there is evidence of a change in culture across the Trust towards improvement. It has identified many areas of good practice, as well as areas that require urgent action. It notes that for many of the areas identified, action plans for improvement already exist and are being implemented.

We note that the Secretary of State for Health has announced that the Trust is one of 11 Trusts to be placed in special measures. The CCG will support the Trust through that process.

Dr Anil Chopra, Chair of Basildon and Brentwood CCG said, “We fully support the Keogh review team’s assessment that one of the urgent priorities for the Trust is that it is allowed a period of stability to enable it to deliver its challenging programme of transformation.

“The CCG’s priority is to ensure that the services we commission for our population meet the highest standards of quality and safety. We will continue to support and challenge Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals during this process of transformation,” continued Dr Chopra.

Lisa Allen, the CCG’s Executive Nurse said, “We will closely monitor standards of patient care at the Trust by continuing our programme of weekly unannounced visits along with monthly performance meetings with senior clinicians, working together with other agencies including Monitor and the Care Quality Commission to secure a sustained improvement in standards at the Trust.”
