Hearts go out to Basildon perfusionist

A CLINICAL perfusionist at The Essex Cardiothoracic Centre (CTC) at Basildon Hospital has been commended for his part in the care of patients with heart disease.

Perfusionists are responsible for operating the machines that keep people alive during serious procedures, such as open heart surgery.

Ben Middleton, Lead Perfusionist, who nominated Scott for the staff award, said: “Scott is frequently instrumental in the success of interventions for cardiac patients and I believe he should be recognised for his contribution. Obviously it is a team effort, but Scott does a great job.”

Scott, who joined the Trust last year, said: “Thanks for a great compliment. I am very happy to be working here.”

The winner of the monthly staff team award was Linford Ward, where patients are cared for following surgery.

Liz Dunn, Clinical Development Sister nominated the team, saying: “Excellent leadership and teamwork have transformed this into a calm organised ward providing excellent patient care. There is a real emphasis on working together and supporting each other to provide the best possible care for patients.”

Mark Pinckney, Charge Nurse, and Kim Piper, Healthcare Assistant, accepted the award on behalf of their colleagues. Kim, who has worked on Linford Ward for 17 years, said: “It is hard work, but it’s worth it.”

Clare Panniker, Chief Executive of the Trust, congratulated the winners and presented them with their certificates and prizes.
