NHS Basildon and Brentwood CCG, together with NHS Thurrock CCG is to invest an extra £1 million into stroke services at Basildon Hospital this year to deliver better care and better outcomes for people who suffer from stroke locally.
Since 2011 different options for stroke services across the whole of south Essex have been proposed as part of the Midlands and East Stroke Review. As commissioners of health services for people living in Basildon and Brentwood and Thurrock, both CCG’s priority is to ensure quality services for its local population.
Tom Abell, Chief Officer NHS Basildon and Brentwood CCG said, “Stroke is a major cause of death and disability in our area and while local people who suffer a stroke currently get a good standard of care, with the right investment we can improve outcomes for patients.
“This investment in stroke services will mean extra staff providing faster treatment for patients in the crucial early stages of a stroke, better nursing and therapy support for patients during their recovery and stronger links with community rehabilitation services to ensure a smooth transition of care when a patient is ready to leave hospital.”
Mandy Ansell, Chief Operating Operator NHS Thurrock CCG, said: “We have listened very closely to the wishes of local residents, patients and councillors. We also acknowledge that most people who have a stroke currently receive a good standard of care but we know that it is possible to improve stroke services for local people. We want to assure the public that we remain committed to developing local stroke services and will continue to listen to the views of local residents.”
A long term decision on the configuration of stroke services for patients across south Essex has yet to be made. This investment will ensure that local patients continue to receive high quality stroke care.
