Basildon Hospital stroke team get mucky for charity!

THE stroke teams at Basildon University Hospital got muddy and mucky working together to complete a 5K obstacle race – and raised cash for the stroke service in the process.

Nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and psychologists based on the Trust’s two stroke wards Lister and Pasteur wards, discussed taking part in the Mucky Races in Braintree as part of a team-building exercise.

But as their plans gained momentum, they also decided to put their hard work to good use and raise some money for additional equipment for the wards.

Jessica Langley, Lister stroke team lead, said: “Some of us run for pleasure, so when the mucky races were mentioned it just escalated from there. 18 of us completed the 5K run with walls, ponds and other obstacles.

“It was such good fun and everyone finished with a huge smile on their face. Plus we managed to raise £600 for additional equipment for the stroke wards.”

The Mucky Races was held on 17 October 2015. More staff and supporters of the hospital are signed up to complete the 6K Dirty Dozen obstacle race at Barleylands, in Billericay, on 20 August 2016.

If you’re interested in joining them or would like to raise money for a ward, team or department within Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals, please contact the charity office for more information on 01268 524900 ext 2894, 2897 or email charity@btuh.nhs.uk.
