TILBURY schoolchildren have chosen Basildon University Hospital’s children’s wards to carry out a random act of kindness.
Pupils from across the different year groups at Gateway Academy have been doing a special project about kindness.
As Basildon is their local hospital, they chose to donate toiletries and plush cuddly toys to the younger patients, plus made homemade cupcakes for the staff.
Student Katie Gilbert (pictured front centre), 14, spoke to hospital staff and said: “You make a positive change to our community and we can’t thank you enough. Everyone has been helped by Basildon Hospital for many different reasons.”

The students, who led the project and decided what they wanted to do, worked late into the evening preparing the presents for the wards. A select group of students were allowed on to the wards to deliver their gifts in person.
Jerusha Murdoch-Kelly, head of nursing for women and children’s, said to the students: “It’s is so thoughtful of you to choose us for your project and I’m sure your random act of kindness to our patients, will return to you.”
