International Day of the Midwife celebrated at Basildon Hospital

MIDWIVES got their bake on to raise money for their peers in Africa during International Day of the Midwife.

Cupcakes, scones and large cakes for slicing and sharing were on offer, with the chocolate cake (pictured left) winning best cake.

Donna Southam, audit midwife, said: “We had sold out of cakes by 11.30am and raised £330 for Midwives in Africa. Every expectant mother deserves a happy, healthy and safe birth.

“In order for birth to be safer access to maternal healthcare globally needs to be improved, starting with providing excellent midwifery training to midwives to support them into supporting pregnant women. Our donations will contribute towards this.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the cake sale and made us midwives feel very loved.”

The midwife service at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals has an online social media service called Maternity Direct Plus.

The Facebook site is designed for mums, mums-to-be and their families to ask questions, get advice and support, directly from a midwife about anything related to pregnancy, childbirth and looking after a baby.
