Basildon Hospital maternity staff take centre stage at major conference

THE excellent-rated maternity unit at Basildon Hospital gained another feather in its cap, as clinical staff, plus one baby, took centre stage at a major international conference.

A team of doctors, midwives and medical students were selected to give 12 presentations at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) World Congress 2016.

The topics related to the high quality care and learning provided in the unit, including service innovations for pregnant women with diabetes, medical student educational projects and junior doctor audits.

The conference hosted 2,000 delegates – experts in the field from around the world – at the International Convention Centre, Birmingham.

Among the team from Basildon Hospital who shared their knowledge at the conference was Dr YeeYin Chan, who took her three-month-old baby along too. She said: “It was a great chance to hear people from the top of their field presenting their most current research. We have taken away many things which will come into our own practice.”

Mr Amaju Ikomi, consultant obstetrician and divisional lead for research, said: "To be asked to present so many papers on such a breadth of subjects is a performance on par with many specialist centres.

“We are extremely proud of this achievement which is an endorsement of our commitment to the teaching of scientific methodology and providing quality care".
