THE first specialist dementia Admiral Nurse in Essex has been appointed at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
Jane Gilby is an experienced nurse with wide-ranging expertise who has already been working with patients with dementia at Basildon University Hospital for three years. Now she has been appointed as an Admiral Nurse through a partnership between the Basildon University Hospital and Dementia UK.
Admiral Nurses are at the forefront of dementia care and work with families, offering them one-to-one support, expert guidance and practical solutions. Their knowledge of the challenges dementia presents to patients in hospital can mean shorter hospital stays and more co- ordinated care for people with dementia.
Jane Gilby, Admiral Nurse, said: “Admiral Nurses in acute hospitals have been shown to improve communication between the patient, family and clinical staff, avoiding some of the complications that can arise and often shortening the patient’s stay as a result. I am very pleased to be appointed an Admiral Nurse and hope my appointment will continue to build on the good work we have already started at Basildon University Hospital, around dementia care.”
Dawn Patience, director of nursing at Basildon University Hospital, said: “Dementia is becoming more prevalent, especially among our older patients and although Jane has been a specialist dementia nurse at the Trust for some years now, to be able to develop and build the role in partnership with Dementia UK is fantastic news for our patients and the hospital.”
Victoria Lyons, Senior Consultant Admiral Nurse at Dementia UK, said: “The unique dementia expertise and experience an Admiral Nurse brings is a lifeline – they are able to anticipate the additional complications
dementia can present for a patient in hospital, and as a result, work with other clinical staff to offer the best care to the person with dementia and support their family. We’re delighted to be partnering with Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to ensure that families have access to this specialist dementia support.”
