THE first baby born at Basildon University Hospital on the 70th birthday of the NHS happens to have a mum who is a ward sister.
First-time mum Kelly Taverner, 33, who works on Burstead ward at Basildon University Hospital, started experiencing strong contractions while at home in Tilbury, on Monday 2 July.
Baby Izzie Patricia Buckingham finally arrived in the world at 7.58am on Thursday 5 July, weighing in at 7 pounds.
Mum Kelly said: “We had a conversation at about 1am about the fact it was NHS70 and my mum said ‘what a day to be born’.
“It was only about an hour after she arrived we were told she was the first baby to be born on NHS70 at Basildon.”
