College students inspired by hospital’s specialist heart and lung centre

OVER 30 sixth form students from a local college rolled up their sleeves and gained an insight into what it’s like to work in the world-renowned Essex Cardiothoracic Centre (CTC) at Basildon Hospital.

This unique experience day showed students from Sir George Monoux College a range of treatments available for patients needing heart and lung care, sparking their interest in pursuing careers in healthcare.

They were shown the intensive care unit, catheter labs and theatres where staff discussed the anatomy and physiology of the heart and lungs, demonstrated dissections, various scans and CPR.

Imran Mirza, a Science Teacher at Sir George Monoux College, said: “Our students were deeply inspired by their visit to the Essex CTC. Seeing the dedication and compassion of the healthcare professionals has motivated the students to pursue their studies with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment. We are grateful to the entire CTC team for this opportunity.”

Following the visit several students showed interest in returning to the CTC for work experience.
