THURROCK COUNCIL could hand a private operator new 15-year leases to continue running two of its care homes reports the Local Democracy Reporter.

Cabinet members will next week consider proposals to extend agreements with Runwood Homes Ltd at Bennett Lodge in Grays and Leatherland Lodge in South Ockendon, both of which provide residential, dementia and respite care.

If approved, the leases would be on full repairing and insuring terms, meaning Runwood would be responsible for maintenance and insurance. Cabinet approval is required due to the value exceeding £200,000.

Deputy council leader Alan Benson said: “The demand for residential care placements for older people remains significantly high.

“These two care homes have Good rating from their latest CQC inspections and provided Thurrock with great support in this vital service.”

The council says the move would secure continued provision for elderly residents, support local care infrastructure and generate a stable income stream.

A 48-hour “first refusal” clause would allow the authority to prioritise placements for local residents.

Alternative options, including doing nothing or re-marketing the sites, were ruled out over risks to residents and potential loss of income.

While officers flagged financial and maintenance risks, these have been assessed as medium and low respectively following due diligence.

A final decision is due at a cabinet meeting on June 23.
