Grays postmaster shocked after armed raid

POLICE are appealing for witnesses following an armed robbery at a Post Office in Basildon on Saturday morning (March 12).

A man dressed in a balaclava and armed with a handgun called at the rear of the Post Office in Whitmore Way, while it was still closed at around 8am and demanded money from the postmaster, a man his 40s from Grays.

The suspect forced the victim to open the safe and removed a five-figure sum of cash.

He then tied up the postmaster and escaped via the rear of the Post Office in to Hardy Close.

The postmaster managed to attract the attention of a member of the public passing by who was able to alert police.

The postmaster was left shaken but unhurt.

The suspect is described as white, 5ft 6ins tall, wearing a balaclava, gloves, black jacket, blue jeans, and black moccasin style shoes. He spoke with an Irish accent.
