Hazard zone established as large pile of tyres alight near Tilbury Fort

Update: 1500 hrs

Crews have declared the scene safe and the hazard zone has now been removed meaning both the railway line and roads have re-opened.

Update 13:15hrs:

A 200 metres exclusion zone has been established and Essex Police called in for traffic control.

Trains on the Fenchurch Street Line have been stopped as a result of the exclusion zone.

Update: 1240 hrs

Owing to a lineside fire between Tilbury Town and East Tilbury; Trains: 1150 Southend Ctl – Fenchurch St via Ockendon will divert via Basildon.

Network Rail are alongside Fire Service.

Buses have been despatched but may take time to get on schedule.

FIRE CREWS are tackling a fire involving a large pile of tyres near to the Tilbury Fort.

Crews are wearing breathing apparatus and using two hose reel jets and one foam jet to tackle the fire.

Because of the remote location a water relay – in which fire engines take it in turns to leave the site to replenish their on board water supplies – is in use.

Update: The incident commander has reported that the fire involves a number of cylinders including an acetylene cylinder.

A hazard zone is being established around the incident.
