So you’ve decided to take the plunge and hit the slopes for the first time?
As a novice skier you may be experiencing a mix of excitement along with a few nervous jitters about what lies ahead.
But to make sure it isn’t all downhill from here, we’ve drawn up some helpful tips to help gear you up for your first snowy adventure.
Skiing is a very physical activity so you need to prepare you body before you go. Take regular cardio exercise such as running, swimming, skating or bike riding. It will not only improve your endurance but also strengthen your lungs in preparation for high altitude
Borrow as much of your gear as possible. Skiing is not cheap and can be extremely cold. Borrow ski jackets, trouser, goggles and gloves from a friend who has been before to help cut down on costs. Take clothing that can be layered as temperatures can fluctuate. Don’t forget sturdy walking boots which have a grip, UV filter sunglasses and earmuffs
Check with your doctor to see if any vaccinations are needed where you are going, and while you’re there, get him to give you a medical examination to ensure you’re fitting fit for the exertions ahead
If you are lucky enough to live near a dry ski slope get some lessons before you go
Plan ahead and as part of your holiday package, ask your travel agent to set up ski lessons with a qualified teacher
Hire ski and protective helmets from a reputable trader
Get insurance specific for winter sports – you just never know!
Know your black from your blue. Understand the labels of ski runs will ensure you don’t end up flying down a black run by mistake. Black is the most difficult, then red, blue and green
