Colin’s Blog

Hi All,

My name is Colin Munford and I am studying Journalism at University. During my time there I will be expressing my views and opinions on absolutely anything and everything.

With university in mind, I have just seen on the news and on websites articles regarding Lord Mandelson’s latest talks on fees.

He believes that fees will have to rise, but to aid the poorer students.

Although this is a good idea in theory, surely this will never
work, as unless they increase the loans and grants they give to students like me then it will bring about the elitism theory at universities.

Many of my friends made the decision not to go to university and
their reasons have hit home to me.

They are not in as much a debt as I will be for the foreseeable future, and with the costs going up surely it will just deter students from continuing their education and numbers will continue to decrease.

I have found a shocking statistic that only one in three students go to university straight after school.

I believe they’re will have to be a major overhaul of the current loan system to students and with a review to be carried out in the autumn, it cannot come too soon.

I am glad I only have a year to go just in case it would make a drastic change!
