Angela Supports Seal Ban

Angela Smith, MP for Basildon and East Thurrock, has published her latest Animal Welfare Newsletter, which is sent to over 500 constituents who have written to her over the years she has been an MP on the issue of Seal bans.

The newsletter leads on the European-wide ban on import of seal skins from Canada, an issue close to Angela’s heart. In the newsletter, Respect for Animals’ Mark Glover says, “This legislation closes the market for products from commercial seal hunts all over the world, including Canada’s – the most brutal slaughter of marine mammals. I would like thank Angela Smith for her help on this campaign over many years.”

Angela writes, “Before I was an MP, I saw the young seals at first hand on the ice-floes of Canada, so I am particularly pleased at this internationally-important achievement.”

The newsletter also includes reports of Angela’s national Animal Welfare Award, the Good Egg awards for Compassion in World Farming, RSPCA combating dog fighting and the need for an alternative to bearskins on ceremonial headwear.

Copies are available from Angela’s parliamentary office on 020 7219 6273.
