A secret report into the way Thurrock Council awarded £11Million of building work at three Thurrock schools has been called-in for closer scrutiny by Thurrock Labour Councillors.
The multi million work rebuilding of West Thurrock Primary School, extending Tudor Court Primary and the Ockendon Schools was awarded between December 2007 and April 2008 by Thurrock Council’s Children and Education and Families Directorate.
The alarm was raised and an inquiry launched last December following a request “retrospective contractual approval” for the work.
Speaking about the call-in Leader of the Labour Group Councillor John Kent said:
“We’ve called this matter in because we have very real concerns about the way these building projects have been handled and the process of selecting the firms to carry out the work.
“We believes it’s in the public interest for these matters to be properly examined by a wider circle of Councillors because a great deal of council tax payers money was involved.
“It’s difficult for us to say much more at this stage because this whole affair has been shrouded in secrecy; even the report by Price Waterhouse Cooper’s was considered in secret by the Council’s Cabinet”.
