Cheesecake at Shavout

On Saturday 22nd May, Shenfield, Brentwood and Districts Synagogue (a.k.a. Rosh Tikvah), celebrated Shavuot for the first time, as a new Liberal Jewish community. We sang songs, reflected on the teachings of this festival (which celebrates the ‘Giving of the Law’). And, of course, ate lots of cheesecake. Cheesecake is an added delight of this time; one explanation given for this particular tradition is that in the Torah the Jewish people are promised a “Land flowing with milk and honey.” Dairy meals recall this lyrical description of Israel.

Like all of Rosh Tikvah’s celebrations, Shavuot was a time for the community to come together and enjoy each others’ company. As we are a new community, our traditions are not yet set. However, it is fair to say that one tradition which is already firmly in place, is that of enthusiasm and a sense of pride in what we have achieved so far.
