Military eyes were focused on two of Thurrock’s historic sites last week.
Thirty-five members of the Royal Artillery Historical Society and friends of the Firepower Museum in Woolwich visited the borough’s two ancient forts on Wednesday (16 June).
Jonathan Catton, Thurrock Council’s heritage officer, said: It was great to show off our unique Thurrock heritage, not just the forts but also to tell them about the local history that connects the buildings to real people and events.
“Most of the group had never been here before, but after the tour all said they need to come back and discover more about our local and military heritage!”
The day was spent looking at Thurrock’s unique military heritage with the group toured Coalhouse Fort and its surrounding military gun sites and radar tower at East Tilbury.
After lunch in the historic World’s End pub the tour continued around Tilbury Fort.
The group ranged from a Major-General through to civilians with an interest in British Army heritage.
