A small group of Palmer’s BTEC Music Technology students have been working closely with The Royal Opera House Thurrock developing soundscapes for the opening of the Royal Opera House Bob and Tamar Manoukian in December.
Students have been involved in a number of weekly workshops run by Royal Opera House Thurrock over the last few months, led by Sound Designer Nick Jones and supported by Music Technology teacher Andy Mayell.
The students have produced soundscape compositions that will be featured during the opening celebrations for the Production Workshops and will be played outside in the grounds of the High House. All the sounds used are linked directly to the community and the theme of the opera, which include sounds of the river Thames as well as dialect from locals etc.
Nick Jones, said: “The students have taken to the project really well. I think they were originally a bit sceptical about how to go about creating a soundscape but they were soon coming up with good ideas of their own and I’m very happy with the finished results”.
Mark Vinall, Principal of Palmer’s College said: “I am thrilled to see and hear the results of this great partnership between the Royal Opera House and the College. It has provided our students with a brilliant opportunity to contribute to the work of the Opera House in Thurrock.”
The students work will also be showcased at Thameside Theatre on Monday 12th July 2010. Royal Opera House Education is holding a morning event to celebrate and showcase work undertaken by schools and colleges in Thurrock.
