THE CLOSURE of the Thameside Theatre as well as Thurrock’s only Care Home, Collins House are just two of the possible budget savings Thurrock’s ruling Labour group may make as they face the challenge of slashing the council’s budget by tens of millions.
At next wednesday’s meeting of the Thurrock Council Cabinet, Portfolio Holders will be asked to agree in principle to the “changes”.
The most disturbing changes both in the short term and long term are those surrounding adult social care. The social, economic and political consequences in the borough could be devastating.
Among the proposed changes mooted are:
1. Thurrock Carers Centre to close with a saving of £212,000
2. The closure of Collins House in Corringham with a projected saving of £1 million.
3. The closure of the Hathaway Road Respite Unit
4. Savings of 25% on all contracts up for renewal including services for:
a. Domestic Violence
b. Meals On Wheels
c. All Voluntary Sector Grants
5. The closure of the Thameside Theatre Complex
6. To cut the remainder of Community Cohesion Grant
7. Reduce Impulse Leisure Grant by £60,000
8. Cease “Match Funding” For PCSO’s: £227,000
9. Cuts to the Royal Opera House provision: £150,000
10. Changes in Waste Collection
YourThurrock will be interviewing all the key partners and politicians over the next few weeks in this vital time for the Thurrock economy and public services in order to gauge the political mood in the borough.

Scathing cuts by labour, now why does that not supprise me, after spending out on art and other white elephants we now see that they want to scrap Thameside Theatre, change the wate collection & close a care home, each of which will have a massive effect on the local people.
Maybe if they started by reducing their own salaries and all the expenses that councillors take then they could save money, also get rid of all these outside consultants that they keep bringing in, if they can’t do the job themselves then they should not be in there.
the only shock is – that LABOUR have any SILVER left to sell – after many LABOUR plunders and blunders over MANY decades – this has been their perpetual outcome. The general level of Insight and intelligence within the Council chambers is – very depressing. The hard working are left with only LABOUR PAINS time on time again. More ‘property deals’ in the offing – no doubt … at this rate the new Chief Executive will have nothing left to direct… what’s his salary? From all that has been written about him in the NATIONAL exposes on him : services under his management – soon drop standards and leave much to be desired – whilst he trots around on VIP class travel. Yes, John Kent – another GREAT CHOICE by YOUR kind of people. It all makes one want to Vomit – to be frank – I, for one will never attend anything at which his choice of MAYOR is attending – she is another question mark on reality. More echoes of George Orwell – Animal Farm chaos. Unbelievable. Absolutely – unbelievable.
