THIS weekend the sleepy corner of Essex that we call Chelmsford was no more. In it’s place stood a whirling pit of musical mayhem as V Festival celebrated its 15th year – and what a celebration it was!
As a ‘V Festival-Virgin’ I didn’t know what to expect but it’s obvious that Richard Branson is the guy in charge – this festival was well managed and a joy to be at. If you needed it, they had it and you didn’t have to queue that long for it. But if you needed to find your friends after a trip to the bar you had no chance, as the whole place was a phone signal muddler.
The great thing about any festival is how it produces a completely mixed bag of individuals, having fun and 95% far from sober. V was no exception. 20 Fred Flintstones appeared to watch Paul Weller, all drinking beer from measuring jugs. Full frontal nudity was completely acceptable. And everyone drew inspiration from this clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DljZvX3iCEA) and the whole place was screaming and shouting Alan!?
But lets get down to the nitty gritty: the music. The line-up was incredible with iconic acts such as Madness getting the over-whelming audience skanking, Florence and the Machine bringing people to tears and Faithless creating a sea of hands raised and pumping the air. Kasabian closed the festival on Sunday and went out with a major bang, with their lead singer declaring ‘This is why you came!’ to their audience.
That’s not why I went to V Festival, but after watching them it might be why I go next year!
