THE ROCKS continued their winning ways as they overcame Zamaretto Central Division outfit Leighton 2-1 at Rookery Hill.
East Thurrock started well when Max Cornhill forced the ball home from close range.
They failed to press home their advantage. It always seemed as if it would be a matter of if but the swirling wind made it hard for both teams to gain any momentum.
Leighton were much improved in the second half and were give an opportunity when home centre back Steve Sheehan was dismissed for tugging back James Hatch as he chased down a long ball and the visitors looked to have forced a replay when Enzo Silvestri got on the end of a cross into the box and scored in the 81st minute
That set up a frantic finale but referee Neil Baker was to play a key role in the game’s pivotal moment, spotting a shirt pull in a crowded box by Cunningham, who was booked but more importantly Kris Newby showed courage to slot home the subsequent 85th penalty, having missed his last two.
